Dujiangyan, located on the Minjiang River in the western part of the Chengdu Plain, about 50 kilometers away from the city of Chengdu, was originally constructed in the third century BC. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it can control water flow without the use of dams. For more than 2000 years, Dujiangyan has been playing an effective role in flood control and irrigation, making the Chengdu Plain a fertile land free from drought and flood and one of the most important grain-producing areas in China. As the oldest, still-in-use, non-dam-control water irrigation system in the world, Dujiangyan project embodies the wisdom of harmonious coexistence between Chinese people and nature.
